31. The Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge, Pete Brown, Jo Jones All Stars at Newport

The Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge, Pete Brown, Jo Jones All Stars at Newport.jpg

Coleman Hawkins and Jo Jones have both featured in my jazz library until this point. This is Roy Eldridge's first appearance. I was inclined to put in one of Roy's early solo recordings that he made in the early 1950's when travelling in Europe, Roy's Got Rhythm. It showcases his vocal talents and a more bluesy side to his horm playing, it's definitley worth checking out. Also, of course, anything that featured his playing in the 1940's with the Gene Krupa band that includes his big hits with Krupa and Anita O'Day including Rocking Chair is worth seeking out.

However I have plumbed for this album as a showcase for Eldridge's talents. The setting is the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival. The All Stars are led by Coleman Hawkins but all of its members have moments to shine. Eldridge is on top form, his energetic soloing bouncing off the record. It was also my first time listening to the perhaps lesser well-known Pete Brown. (Jo Jones' solo is off the hook by the way!).
